Nuclear Fuel Industry - Uranium Dioxide Milling

Background / Requirement

 

A large international nuclear fuel producer approached Quadro with an application to size reduce rods (approx. 1 inch (2.5 cm) by 1 inch (2.5 cm) by 4 inches (10 cm) of compacted raw uranium dioxide powder.

 

The process objective was to provide a free flowing, uniformly sized granulation to a pellet press.

 

Due to the proprietary nature of the industry, it is unknown to Quadro what the exact particle size requirement was. In spite of this, Quadro’s technical personnel worked closely with the customer to determine the proper tooling for the Comil.

 

Summary

 

Both Comils have since been purchased. Plans to purchase more Comils for similar applications have been discussed and carried through.

 

This is an excellent Comil application. We now have installations in the U.S.A., Canada and United Kingdom.
