Scrap Reclaim (Scrap Rework)

Background / Requirement

In the baking and confectionery industry where 3-5% of production is typically rejected as scrap, the process of scrap reclaim is a very important cost reduction/profit consideration. Most Plant Managers are very interested in methods to reduce manufacturing costs. And most Quality Control programs allow for scrap to be re-introduced to the original mix or batch at a rate of 5-7% of total volume.

Comil Performance

The Comil has been performing a multitude of reclaim applications on a wide variety of products. For example:

1. Hot cream filled and sandwich type cookies into pieces or crumb.

2. A wide assortment of cookies such as chocolate chip, jelly and wafer type into pieces, crumb or powder.

3. Breakfast cereals into crumb or powder.

4. Chocolate/candy bars into pieces or crumb.

5. Baked goods such as breads, cakes, muffins into pieces or crumb.

6. * Hard candy and cough drops into pieces, powder or syrup.

7. * Jelly (gum drop) type candies into syrup or pieces.

8. Granola bars into pieces, crumb or powder.

9. Potato chips, nachos, taco shells into pieces, crumb or powder.

* Hot water addition is required to produce syrup.

Depending on the material to be reclaimed, the Comil can produce fine paste, chunky paste, free flowing particles, or syrup. Even products containing caramel can be reduced in size for reclaim.

Summary

Heat sensitive, high-fat, difficult materials can be reduced in size continuously without excessive heat build-up or screen blockage. If required, the Comil can gently break apart granola bars and cookies, releasing whole, undamaged ingredients (like raisins, nuts, etc.) for easy separation. The gentle, low RPM operating action of the Comil makes it the ideal mill for these applications. Once installed, it is quite typical for processors to find several other difficult applications that are ideally suited for the Comil.
